All dogs – no matter what age, size or breed – need to take part in some form of daily physical activity. Exercise is not only fun for pets and keeps them active, but it also helps provide mental stimulation, reduce the risk of obesity and prolong their lives. Always consult your vet if you’re unsure about which is the right exercise for your pet.
Here are some fun ways you can exercise your beloved canine companions.
1) Running with your pet
Outdoor exercise is a good reason to step out for some fresh air. If your pet has high energy, consider taking them to the local park and doing a few laps. If you’re unsure about the amount of time, distance or intensity here is a great article with a list of things you should consider before hitting the pavement with your pooch
2) Tug of war
A simple game of tug of war can help challenge your pet both mentally and physically. It can also help strengthen a dog’s confidence, teach them self-control and use up any excess energy. While tug of war is a fun and enjoyable activity for most pets, dogs with a history of aggression should avoid this game. Check with your vet if you’re unsure.
3) Create an obstacle course in your backyard
An obstacle course in your backyard is not only enjoyable for your pet but can provide hours of fun and entertainment for the whole family. If you have kids, get them involved in the process! Get creative and map everything out. Use hula hoops for your dogs to leap through, utilise old boxes for them to jump over or use cushions to create tunnels for your pet to navigate through.
4) Fetch
Engaging your pet in a classic game of fetch can be all they need for a daily exercise fix. You don’t need expensive toys to keep them engaged. A game of fetch can be played with an old tennis ball or sticks found in the park. If it’s a rainy day, this game can also be played indoors from the comfort of your own couch!
5) Hide and seek
Teaching your pet how to play hide and seek can be a fun activity for both you and your furry friend. Place your dog in a separate room or completely out of sight. Hide its favourite toy or treat. Once you’ve hidden the item, release the dog and encourage it to find the item. Make the hiding places easy at first and gradually increase the difficulty.
